Fallen by Karin Slaughter

Fallen is the first book that I have read by Karin Slaughter and I’m excited to have discovered another great crime/thriller writer. Even though Fallen is well into Karin Slaughter’s Will Trent series, it stands well on it’s own without having to know the history of the characters. Having said that, I’m now keen to read the rest of the series, particularly: Undone/Genesis and Broken. Some of Karin Slaughter’s other books also involve Sara Linton who is a key character in this book.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) agent Faith Mitchell returns to her mother’s house where her mother, Evelyn, has been looking after Faith’s baby. On arrival, Faith finds baby Emma locked in a shed, a dead man in the laundry and two other men in a hostage situation, who she then proceeds to kill. With everyone now dead, Faith has no way of finding out what has happened to her mother.

Faith’s boss Amanda Wagner is Evelyn’s best friend and Faith’s partner Will Trent previously investigated Evelyn when she was head of the narcotics division. Evelyn has also been seen with an ex-member of a gang that is heavily involved in drugs.

Faith is frantic to find her mother and to protect her two children from becoming targets of the drug gangs. But, Faith has been temporarily stood down from the force and is now both a witness and a suspect.

The story races through twists and turns involving a complex web of gangs, drugs, prisons and hospitals and Faith, Will and Amanda, along with trauma doctor Sara Linton place their own lives in danger to try to save Evelyn’s life.

I loved the characters in this book. They weren’t superhuman, but had real, non-glamorous faults and insecurities and their reactions and fears were very believable. The private lives of the characters was developed as carefully as the thriller plot.

This is the first of many Karin Slaughter books for me!
