Bernard Cornwell Profile and Books

Bernard Cornwell, OBE, was born in London in 1944. He was a war baby with an English mother and a Canadian father. When he was only a few weeks old, he was adopted by the Wiggins family. They were members of a strict Protestant fundamentalist sect called the Peculiar People, who banned most types of fun and medicine.

He grew up reading the C.S. Forester novels about fictional naval officer Horatio Hornblower during the Napoleonic wars and became fascinated with this period of history.

Bernard escaped to university and took his mother’s maiden name of Cornwell. He then worked in teaching and for the BBC. In 1979 he met and fell in love with an American, Judy. She was unable to work in the UK and he was unable to get a green card to work in the US. But, he was able to live in the US and write.

So, the Sharpe series was born featuring Richard Sharpe, a rifleman in the Napoleonic wars. The series now extends to over 20 books. Cornwell is still living in the US and has written many other historic novels and thrillers, including a number written with his wife Judy, using the pen name Susannah Kells.
