Ruth Rendell Profile and Books

English crime writer Ruth Barbara Rendell, Baroness of Babergh CBE was born 17 February 1930 and died 2 May 2015.

She was born Ruth Graseman and grew up in London with her teacher parents. Even at an early age she was inventing stories and her creative writing caused her some difficulties when she was working as a reporter (embellishment and invention ware not supposed to be part of the job).

She was married at the age of 20 and has a son Simon living in the USA. She and her husband Don Rendell divorced in 1975 but remarried two years later.

Ruth Rendell sat in the House of Lords for the Labour party and was one of the Labour Party’s major financial contributors.

She had three distinct areas of writing. Her police crime series, featuring Detective Inspector Wexford now extends to 24 novels, many of which have been filmed for TV. She has published 28 psychological thrillers/ murder mysteries under the name Ruth Rendell. She has published a further 14 novels under the name Barbara Vine. There have also been several novellas and short story collections. Even over 80 years of age, Ruth Rendell still published thrillers and crime novels regularly.
