Tom Franklin was born in 1963 in Alabama and spent his childhood there. Until graduating from university, Franklin worked in a number of jobs in the construction industry and at a hospital morgue. After completion of his studies, he produced his first book – Poachers (a collection of stories). This book was hugely successful with the title story winning the 1999 Edgar Alan Poe Award. His success has enabled him to work within the creative writing departments of several universities and to focus more on his writing.
His books are mostly based in working-class Southern Alabama and are often dark and violent.
Tom Franklin is married to poet Beth Ann Fennelly and they have two children, Claire and Thomas.
