Dead Woman Walking by Sharon Bolton

‘Dead Woman Walking’ is Sharon Bolton’s latest thriller.

Jessica and Isabel experienced a lot of family tragedy while growing up. At 18 Isabel became a nun. Jessica is still devoted to her and often visits Wynding Priory. Now, on Isabel’s 40th birthday, Jessica has surprised her with a hot air balloon trip.

From the balloon, the sisters witness a murder. Unfortunately the killer sees that the sisters have seen him. When the balloon crashes, 13 people are killed with Jessica the only survivor.

Now the murderer is tracking down the last remaining witness.

The lead investigator, DS Ajax Maldonado is also hunting for Jessica. The police want to find out what really happened on the ill fated balloon ride.

But Jessica is intent on evading everyone, including the police.

This was a complex and thrilling novel as we followed the tragic family lives of Isabel and Jessica, the murderer and Maldonado.

The reasons for the balloon tragedy unfolded slowly over the course of the novel.

Unfortunately someone I know suffers from the same disease that struck down Moira (not rare enough Sharon Bolton) so perhaps I am destined for a life of crime. When I read about Moira, my brain shut down and I missed the rest of the novel. I’m sure it was brilliant.

I’m looking forward to reading my next Sharon Bolton novel, but please, no more obscure diseases.
