The Secrets She Keeps by Michael Robotham

‘The Secrets She Keeps’ is a psychological thriller from Australian author Michael Robotham that is full of twists and turns.

Agatha and Meghan have something in common. They are pregnant and due around the same time. But that’s where the similarities end.

Agatha had a very troubled upbringing and has difficulty with relationships. She is convinced that her baby’s Daddy – ex-boyfriend Haydn will return to her because of the baby. He is currently at sea with the Navy and won’t even take her calls. She currently works part time in a supermarket.

Meghan has two beautiful children and a good looking, charismatic husband – Jack who works as a sports commentator. This third child was not planned. She appears to have the perfect life – she even runs a well known Mummy blog where she posts anecdotes about her family.

Agatha loves Meghan’s life and eventually orchestrates a friendship of sorts.

But both Agatha and Meghan have secrets which are gradually revealed through the story. And meeting each other has devastating consequences for both of them.

This was a twisted and very clever story.

Unfortunately I found the buildup a bit tedious, but it didn’t take too long for the cracks to show and the story to get interesting.

The characters of Agatha and Meghan are brilliantly done and particularly in Agatha’s case there is a whole life of pain within the novel. The other main characters – Jack, Haydn, Cyrus Haven and Simon are also well done.

I’ve read a few of Robotham’s novels now, I’ve enjoyed them all and plan to read many more.
